Job Title: Non-Verbal ASD Teaching Assistant (Special School)
Location: Camden, North London
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 3:30pm
Salary: £90 to £95 per day

A well-regarded Special School in the London Borough of Camden is seeking a patient, resilient and committed Non-Verbal ASD Teaching Assistant to support pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are non-verbal or minimally verbal.

This Camden-based special school is known for its strong multidisciplinary approach and high-quality specialist provision. The role is ideal for a Teaching Assistant with a genuine interest in autism, communication-centred support and structured SEN practice.

You will work closely with experienced SEN teachers, Speech and Language Therapists and wider support staff to help pupils access learning through AAC systems, sensory regulation strategies and consistent routines, ensuring each child is supported to engage and make progress.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group support to non-verbal or minimally verbal pupils with ASD, in line with EHCPs and individual communication plans
  • Support and model the use of AAC approaches including PECS, Makaton, visual symbols, communication boards and assistive technology
  • Assist with TEACCH-informed learning strategies using visual timetables, now and next boards and clear, predictable routines
  • Support pupils with sensory regulation, emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour, responding calmly to behaviours that may challenge
  • Work collaboratively with Speech and Language Therapists to implement communication targets and intervention programmes
  • Maintain a calm, low-arousal and structured learning environment that promotes engagement and reduces anxiety
  • Observe, record and monitor pupil progress, communication attempts and engagement, contributing to reviews and multidisciplinary discussions
  • Support pupils during transitions, unstructured periods and daily routines to ensure consistency across the school day
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience supporting non-verbal or minimally verbal children with ASD in a special school or specialist SEN setting is highly desirable
  • Strong understanding of communication differences, sensory processing needs and behaviour as communication
  • Patient, empathetic and resilient, with the ability to remain calm in challenging situations
  • Confident working as part of a multidisciplinary SEN team and following specialist support plans
  • A Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, SEN or a related field is desirable but not essential
  • An up-to-date Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one
