Job description

SEND Teaching Assistant Opportunities | Kensington & Chelsea | September Start

Trial Dates: Monday 8th – Wednesday 10th July

St Barnabas and St Philip’s Church of England Primary School, a warm and inclusive one-form entry school in Kensington & Chelsea, is currently seeking two dedicated and compassionate professionals to join their team from the start of the new academic year. The school is looking to trial candidates for full-day sessions on any of the following dates: Monday 8th, Tuesday 9th, or Wednesday 10th July.

Role 1: 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant (Year 1) This role involves working closely with a child in Year 1 with Autism and significant speech and language needs. While the child is bright and naturally curious, he can exhibit self-directed and occasionally disruptive behaviours, particularly within structured classroom environments. From September, he will be fully integrated into the Year 1 class, and the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Build a strong, trusting relationship with the child to promote emotional security and engagement

  • Provide consistent, calm 1:1 support throughout the school day

  • Implement strategies to manage challenging behaviour and promote positive interactions

  • Liaise with the class teacher and SENCO to ensure targeted support is aligned with the EHCP

  • Support communication development through structured and informal activities

This position would suit someone with prior experience supporting children with Autism and/or speech and language needs, ideally in a primary school setting.

Role 2: EYFS SEND Support (Reception) This role will be based in the Reception class, supporting several children with a range of additional needs including Autism, global developmental delay, and non-verbal communication. Rather than working 1:1, this position will involve providing targeted, small-group and class-wide support to help all children access learning and participate in daily routines.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the development of early communication, social, and self-care skills

  • Assisting with differentiated activities planned by the class teacher and SENCO

  • Promoting inclusion and engagement in all areas of learning

  • Using visual aids and sensory strategies to support children with complex needs

  • Offering flexible, responsive support as needs arise throughout the day

This role would be ideal for someone with EYFS experience or a background in early childhood education, nursery work, or complex SEN support.

The School

St Barnabas and St Philip’s is a well-regarded, one-form entry primary school with a strong community ethos. The team is committed to inclusive practice, providing tailored support to meet the individual needs of every child. Staff are valued for their professionalism, collaboration, and child-centred approach.
