This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a high-performing DT department in a well-regarded Harlow secondary school that truly invests in its staff.

This Head of Design & Technology role offers not just progression, but genuine influence - with the freedom, resources, and backing to build a standout department.

Why this Head of Design & Technology role stands out:

  • London Fringe salary + TLR offering excellent earning potential and progression
  • Exceptional work-life balance with realistic expectations and strong SLT support
  • State-of-the-art DT facilities and a healthy departmental budget to bring ideas to life
  • Clear pathway to Senior Leadership for those with long-term ambitions
  • Autonomy to shape curriculum direction and introduce modern, industry-relevant concepts
  • Highly engaged students who value practical learning and contribute positively in lessons
  • Tailored CPD & leadership coaching, including NPQ support
  • Collaborative and low-turnover staff team, creating a stable and positive working environment

The Role – Head of Design & Technology

  • Lead and strategically develop the DT curriculum across KS3–KS5
  • Manage and mentor a dedicated DT team, driving high-quality teaching
  • Deliver engaging lessons across DT specialisms (flexibility depending on strengths)
  • Raise attainment and embed a culture of creativity and excellence
  • Oversee departmental resources, health & safety, and enrichment provision

The Ideal Head of Design & Technology

  • UK QTS and a degree in Design & Technology or related subject (2:1 or above)
  • Strong track record of teaching with proven student outcomes
  • Experience in a leadership capacity, or clear readiness to step up
  • Passion for innovation, creativity, and hands-on learning
  • Committed to collaboration, improvement, and whole-school impact

This role is perfect for a current Second in Department ready for their first Head of Department post, or an established Head of DT looking for a more supportive, forward-thinking environment with better long-term prospects.
